A man with a baseball threatened passengers before leaving at Helensburgh shortly after 7.30pm on Friday.
Officers want to trace a man on CCTV who they believe could help them with their enquiries.
He was later seen on a train between Dumbarton Central and Balloch.
The man was last seen walking in the direction of Station Road towards Back Street in Renton.
