A multi-agency rescue operation was launched after a young humpback whale became stranded outside a Scots marine institute in Oban on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to rescue the mammal, which had become trapped in shallow water at Dunstaffnage Bay in Argyll and Bute.

Drone footage captured by the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) confirmed the calf was not entangled and was later able to move itself with the help of the rising tide.

There was no sign of the calf's mother as rescue teams scanned the water around the peninsular to locate her.

Police Scotland, HM Coastguard, British Divers Marine Life Rescue and the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service assisted with the operation.

By 12pm, the whale had moved out of the bay and into deeper water. SAMS will continue to monitor its progress along with HM Coastguard and Divers Marine Life Rescue.

A police spokeswoman said: "The whale has moved into deeper water - it can still be seen from the shore and its progress is being monitored.

"HM Coastguard and British Divers Marine Life Rescue are monitoring the situation."
