A man who tried to kill his disabled partner in a machete attack after he refused to go to the shops for him has been jailed for nearly nine years.

Kevin Donnelly was left badly wounded with a fractured skull and collarbone after his boyfriend Kevin Bryce pounced on him during a disagreement at their flat in Inverclyde on October 22.

Bryce asked Mr Donnelly to go to a local shop for him and when he refused, the 35-year-old grabbed the machete and struck him repeatedly on the head, body and legs, causing the victim to drop his stick and slump to the ground.

After the attack, Bryce told his blood-soaked victim "you f***ing deserved it" before admitting to police officers that he "chopped him up".

Mr Donnelly, 49, was already disabled and using a walking stick at the time of the assault as a result of another machete attack 15 years earlier.

Bryce admitted to the charge of attempted murder and was sent to jail for eight years and eight months after his trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

The court was told how Mr Donnelly branded Bryce "evil" and he has not returned home due to his horror ordeal.

The couple had been in an on-off relationship for many years and Bryce was living in the victim's flat in Port Glasgow when the attack took place.

The court heard that Mr Donnelly remains badly affected by the attack and now has to use two walking stick as a result.

Lord Mulholland said the jail-term would have been 13 years, but for the guilty plea.

The judge told Bryce: "This was the attempted murder of your disabled partner. You repeatedly struck him with a fearsome weapon.

"His injuries are extensive. The court takes a very serious view of such crimes committed within a domestic setting."
