A man who tried to kill his ex-partner weeks after they split has been jailed for seven years.

David Munroe attacked Nattassja Cairns at her flat in Drumchapel, Glasgow, with his fists before grabbing a knife from a drawer and repeatedly stabbing her.

The 33-year-old returned to the High Court in Glasgow on Monday having earlier pled guilty to an attempted murder charge.

Lord Clark told him: "This was a deeply disturbing and vicious attack on a defenceless woman.

"It threatened her life and left her permanently scarred."

The court was told Ms Cairns had ended her six-year relationship with Munroe in May this year.

When she found him waiting outside her flat on June 27, she initially ignored him but then let him in, fearing he would force his way inside.

Munroe then brutally attacked Ms Cairns before he fled the scene.

Ms Cairns was rushed to hospital with initial concerns she had a collapsed lung.

Prosecutor Greg Farrell said medics described her injuries as a "viable threat to life".

The court heard that Ms Cairns remains "frightened he may seek to contact her in the future".

John McElroy, defending, said Munroe "bitterly regrets" what happened.

Lord Clark said the jail-term would have been nine years and four months but it had been reduced for the guilty plea.

Munroe will be supervised for a further three years on his release and has been banned from contacting Ms Cairns or posting about her on social media.
