Eight people including children have been rescued from a burning block of flats.

Emergency services were called to Stewart Court in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, at 1am on Tuesday.

Five adults and three children were rescued as the fire ripped through the building.

Around 25 firefighters were called before leaving the scene at 2.50am.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Eight people were rescued, three of whom of children.

"We don't exactly know what floor they were rescued from.

"Five appliances were sent to the scene."
