Commuters are facing major rail delays after flooding forced a main line to close in Kilmarnock.

The issue was reported between Kilmarnock and Barrhead at around midday on Wednesday.

Trains running through the area have been replaced by shuttle buses while engineers resolve the issue.

High winds and heavy rain caused areas to flood across Scotland on Wednesday morning.

ScotRail tweeted: "Due to flooding, the line between #Kilmarnock & Barrhead is currently closed.

"Engineers from @NetworkRailSCOT are on their way to assess the situation."

Staff posted footage of the damage on Twitter and added: "Here's the flooding on the #Kilmarnock line.

"As the water is flowing and nearly above one of the rails, we can't run any trains until @NetworkRailSCOT engineers have confirmed that no ballast (stones which help hold the tracks in place) has been washed away."

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Wednesday in areas such as Dumfries and Galloway, Lothian and the Borders.

It came into force from 1am and lasted until 1pm, with disruption to travel and potential flooding of a few buildings highlighted as being possible.

Sepa also had flood alerts in place in Argyll and Bute, Ayrshire and Arran, Central and Dumfries and Galloway.
