A derelict school has been destroyed after a major blaze in Glasgow.

The fire ripped through the former Howford Primary School on Crookston Road at 3.50pm on Monday.

Firefighters are still battling the blaze, which has caused substantial damage.

Two people were evacuated from nearby buildings while crews tackled the flames.

The school, which is next to Rosshall Hospital and Leverndale Hospital, closed in February.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We still have one appliance at the scene.

"It has now been scaled back."

She added: "Substantial damage has been caused to the whole of the building.

"We don't have any information relating to the cause or where it started."

More than 40 firefighters were called at the height of the blaze.

Crookston Road was closed for six hours but later reopened at 9.45pm on Monday.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "Emergency services remain on location and police have closed the entrance to Leverndale Hospital from Crookston Road.

"The traffic signals on Crookston Road at Leverndale Hospital have been switched off."
