A man has been left with serious arm and hand injuries after being attacked with a baseball bat.

The 48-year-old was walking on Eglinton Street, Saltcoats at 12.15am on Tuesday when he was attacked by a man brandishing a baseball bat.

The attacker then headed up Eglinton Street towards Windmill Street.

The victim was treated for serious arm and hand injuries at Crosshouse Hospital.

The suspect is white, slim to medium build and was wearing grey shorts.

Detective constable O'Neil, from Saltcoats CID, said: "This was a vicious attack and we are carrying out extensive inquiries including door to door and checking all available CCTV in order to trace the man responsible.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw the man responsible in the area or witnessed the attack to get in touch with police."
