Family members of a teenage boy who died at a reservoir near Paisley have said their lives "will never be the same."

In a statement released through the police, Ben Thomson's family paid tribute to their "little comedian."

The body of the 14-year-old was recovered from Glenburn Reservoir on around 8.10pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services had launched a major search after the alarm was raised earlier in the evening.

Ben's family said: "Ben was one of the kindest, sweetest son, brother, grandson and friend that anyone could ever have.

"He was our little comedian, always cracking jokes and keeping us all amused.

"Our lives will never be the same."

The headteacher at Ben's school Gleniffer High said he was a promising young footballer.

Lisa Chalmers said: "The Gleniffer High School community are devastated to hear the tragic news of Ben's passing.

"Ben William James Thomson was a well-liked, friendly and very caring pupil, who always greeted you in the corridor. Ben was due to start his fourth year of secondary school in August."

She continued: "As well as succeeding in academic subjects, Ben was also a very talented young footballer, achieving extracurricular awards for his achievements in the game.

"Ben comes from a very loving and close family and our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and sister at this very sad time.

"Pastoral support will be available at the school for pupils."

Earlier, Ben's dad Barry paid tribute to him.

He said: "He was a fun, loving and kind boy and would help anyone.

"He was the kindest and sweetest boy you could meet.

"He was a comedian in his own way and we'll never forget him."

Scottish Water, the owners of the site, said it's assisting in the investigation into the death.

A spokesman said: "We have been working closely with the emergency services who responded yesterday evening to reports that a teenage boy had gone into the water at Glenburn Reservoir.

"We very much regret that the rescue effort was not successful and will assist in any way we can with the investigation of the circumstances.

"All our thoughts at this time are with the family and friends of the young person who has died."
