Children in Maybole and Barassie are set to benefit this summer as South Ayrshire Council expands its summer holiday lunches programme.

Following the successful pilot last year which saw over 7500 free healthy lunches distributed, the council has been working with partners to expand the initiative.

The decision means that Cairn Primary School in Maybole and Barassie Primary School will now run summer holiday lunch programmes, joining more established operations in Girvan and north Ayr.

Throughout the entire seven-week summer holiday, children will be able to go to Barassie and Cairn on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12pm and 2pm for lunch and activity sessions.

Free lunch schemes in Girvan and north Ayr will also continue over the summer months.

South Ayrshire Council leader Douglas Campbell said: "We are delivering services where there is greatest need and our holiday lunch programme is an excellent example of this approach.

"Feedback has been very positive so we are now looking to support families in Barassie and Maybole as well as those in Girvan and north Ayr this summer.

"We don't want children to miss out on meals so this is a great way to ensure they continue to eat well through the holidays, make new friends and stay active."
