Tree-mendous giveaway sees residents offered free wood
North Ayrshire Council is giving away logs and wood chips as part of its sustainability drive.
Gardeners, DIY enthusiasts and owners of wood burning stoves will have a chance to top up their stores next weekend thanks to a council giveaway.
North Ayrshire Council is giving away free logs and wood chips as part of its ongoing sustainability drive to avoid sending waste to landfill.
The wood comes from recent tree-trimming work at the Broomlands and Bourtreehill and will be given away at the former Dreghorn Recycling Centre over the weekend of June 23 and 24.
A council spokesman suggested the wood chips could be used for landscaping, pathways and surfacing play areas, while the logs would make ideal firewood.
Councillor Jim Montgomerie said: "This wood giveaway is a great opportunity for our residents to reap the rewards of our commitment to recycling and sustainability.
"By reusing the wood our officers have collected as part of their everyday work duties, we are diverting it from landfill and instead using it to stage a worthwhile community event.
"We would encourage all those who could make use of the wood to head along and grab a share."
Supplies are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis and there will be limits to the quantity given to each person.
Anyone taking chippings will be expected to bring their own bags or boxes, but shovels will be provided.
Council officers will require proof of North Ayrshire residency, such as a drivers licence or utility bill, before allowing entry.
