Members of the public are being reminded to stay safe on Ayrshire's beaches as the warm weather continues.

It comes as the police, the council, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Coastguard Search and Rescue launch a joint imitative to promote safety at the coast.

With beach visits rising through the summer months, extra officers have been put on patrol on beaches around Ayrshire to ensure a quick response to any incidents.

The public have also been reminded that drinking in public is an offence that could lead to fixed penalty notices being handed out.

Local transport providers and the NHS have also signed on to the safety initiative.

Police Scotland chief inspector Brian Shaw said: "In recent weeks and with improvements in the weather we have seen an increased number of visitors attending our coastline to enjoy everything the area has to offer.

"With the good weather set to continue we do anticipate a significant number of people will head to the beaches of North Ayrshire.

"I would like to assure residents and visitors that a comprehensive plan is in place with our partners in Ayrshire to ensure everyone has a good day and enjoys the beach safely.

"We will have additional officers on patrol in the area - incidents of criminality and antisocial behaviour will be dealt with robustly.

"I would also like to remind everyone that drinking alcohol in public is an offence and could result in offenders receiving a fixed penalty notice."
