Half days for children starting primary one could be a thing of the past in one local authority area.

South Lanarkshire Council is proposing to scrap the practice of having P1 pupils only attend morning sessions for the first month of their schooling.

The council said a number of parents and carers have questioned the practice, saying most children are now used to being in nursery part of the day, and for some, the full day.

It is now seeking views on the plans before the start of the new school year.

A spokeswoman said: "We are proposing that children starting primary one in August 2018 will attend school for the full day from the start of the new school term.

"Primary one pupils will start on Monday August 20. This is the same date that all other pupils return to school. We would like your views on these proposals.

"If parents or carers consider their child is not yet ready for full day, they will have the option to remove their child at lunch time for the first ten school days and not be considered an unauthorised absence."
