Plans to add 23 names to town's war memorial unveiled
A local historian identified fallen servicemen whose names do not appear on the monument.
Proposals have been put forward to add the names of 23 fallen servicemen to the Auchinleck war memorial.
The cenotaph was erected in 1922 in memory of those who had died in the First World War.
In later years the names of those who fell in the Second World War and the Falklands War were added to the monument.
Historian Rab McMurdo has now uncovered the names of 11 local men who lost their lives in the 1914-18 conflict and a further 12 who died in the fight against the Axis powers whose names do not appear on the memorial.
The council is now hoping to consult members of their families and the wider public before their names are added.
Depute provost Claire Leitch, local member for Ballochmyle, said: "Until now the war memorial at Auchinleck was believed to contain all the names of local men who had fallen during times of war.
"Local historian Rab McMurdo, through considerable research, has identified 23 local men who should be included on the war memorial and the addition of their names will ensure that they are properly recognised.
"The years after each World War were a time of great turmoil.
"So many people had lost loved ones and were struggling to survive in the difficult post war conditions.
"We want to ensure that everyone is recognised and a public consultation is now underway regarding our proposals to add the 23 names."
