A chihuahua has died after being violently mauled by a lurcher.

Pamela Reid was walking her three chihuahuas on Troon beach on Sunday when the light-coloured lurcher launched the attack against seven-year-old Dexter.

The dog is said to have "sunk its teeth" into Dexter's head, which the vet said was the cause of death.

Ms Reid from South Ayrshire said: "I am devastated. One blow and it had sunk its teeth into my little boy's head.

"The vet said the head trauma killed him.

"His body went instantly floppy and hit the sand.

"I keep seeing it over and over and over in my head.

"He was a gorgeous seven-year-old long haired chihuahua.

"Such a fun and playful little character, taken so cruelly by what was supposed to be a nice walk on the beach."

Police have launched an investigation and are keen to trace the dog which is believed to be dangerous.

The lurcher's owner is described as a middle-aged female with blonde hair and was wearing a light turquoise jacket.

She is said to have been walking one other dog at the time.

Sergeant Dean Barlas from Troon Police Office said: "We are appealing for anyone with information regarding this incident, or who knows the owner of the lurcher to come forward and contact us.

"The lurcher appeared to be with a woman who was also walking one other dog at the time and we would also appeal for her to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Troon Police Office via 101, quoting incident number 1338 of Monday, March 30.
