High-rise flat demolitions could create 1000 new jobs
If demolished, 369 new properties will need to be built in North Ayrshire.
The demolition and transformation of seven tower blocks could create 1000 new jobs.
The plans to demolish North Ayrshire's seven tower blocks to turn them into low-rise housing are currently under consultation with the tenants.
The three options being considered are: retain and improve all tower blocks, demolish all seven blocks and replace with low-rise housing, and demolish the five Irvine tower blocks only, but retain the Saltcoats tower blocks.
According to the council, the demolition of the tower blocks and construction of 369 new properties to replace them could create 1000 new jobs.
Councillor Joe Cullinane said: "Over the coming weeks, we will be speaking one-to-one with residents and getting their views on the various proposals for the high flats.
"The fact that so many new jobs could be created is something which should be welcomed as it benefits all of our communities.
"However, the most important aspect in all of this is the tenants themselves.
"There is a clear evidential link between quality housing and health and education benefits so I believe this could be a real opportunity to have a positive impact on our tenants' lives."
