Scotland's first 'drug rehabilitation village' for people with drug and alcohol addictions opened in South Ayrshire on Friday.

The new residential recovery centre offers a far longer programme than others in the UK.

River Garden, at the former agricultural college Auchincruive, will support up to 40 individuals at any one time.

Residents will be trained in a range of social enterprise activities to create a visitor destination with a café, bakery and garden nursery.

The three-year programme is based on successful projects in Italy, Sweden and the USA.

Mark Bitel, Independence From Drugs and Alcohol Scotland, said: "This three-year programme is radical and unlike any other type of service currently available to this group of people in the UK.

"We aim to demonstrate that there is a different approach with good outcomes for individuals who complete their programmes, their families, communities and ultimately, the wider society".
