Citizens Theatre awarded additional £1m for redevelopment
The funding will be used to conserve, repair and expand the Glasgow based theatre.
A theatre company in Glasgow has received additional £1m grant to complete their work preserving the landmark venue.
The Citizens Theatre Company was awarded the cash from Glasgow City Council on Thursday, bringing the total funding support from the council for the project to over £5m.
The £19.4m redevelopment will see the conservation, repair and expansion of one of Scotland's oldest and much loved working theatres.
Work required to transform the council-owned building is due to start on the site in the Gorbals later this year with completion expected by December 2020.
Citizens Theatre executive director Judith Kilvington said: "We warmly welcome the news that Glasgow City Council's City Administration Committee has approved an additional £1m of funding for our transformational redevelopment project.
"This additional funding is essential not only to the redevelopment of the Citizens Theatre, but to the regeneration of the Gorbals and Laurieston.
"We are now calling on the general public to help us write the next act in our story by getting behind our We Are Citizens campaign to raise the final £1.6m needed."
In June 2018, the Citizens Theatre Company will move out of the Category B listed building, which it leases from Glasgow City Council.
It will continue to produce its work at Tramway and provide its Citizens Learning activities at Scotland Street School Museum.
