Scots comic book writer Mark Millar has hit out at Creative Scotland following its decision to cut Ayr Gaiety Theatre's funding.

The writer, best known for his work on Marvel Knights Spider-Man, Civil War, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Wanted and Kick-Ass, described the theatre as a "Scottish treasure".

Chief executive of the theatre Jeremy Wyatt said the funding cut will force them to review reducing the volume of productions on offer.

In response to the announcement, Mr Millar took to social media to voice his opinion.

He said: "Half a million in public money on Trainspotting 2 (which you see zero return on) while pulling all funding from Scottish treasures like the Ayr Gaiety?

"I recognise investment needed to attract productions, but there's not a chance Sony wouldn't shoot T2 in Scotland.

"I loved that flick, but Ayrshire surely needed that dough more. Crazy!"

Chief executive of Creative Scotland, Janet Archer, said: "While we can't support everyone, we seek to provide a range of different opportunities to access support across all of our funding routes."
