An Irvine gymnast has been selected for the Team Scotland squad for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

David Weir, who grew up in Dreghorn, is one of eight gymnasts who were confirmed on Wednesday.

This comes after the 19-year-old competed in seven UK School Games becoming the first gymnast in Scotland to be selected in every age category.

Mr Weir is training wile studying chemical engineering part-time at Strathclyde University.

The 11-day competition is being held in the Gold Cost, four years after Glasgow held the event.

It will be the biggest sporting spectacular the region has seen, with more than 6000 athletes expected to take part.

The games will run from April 4 to April 15.
