Music legend Paul Simon is coming to Glasgow this summer as part of his final world tour.

The revered singer songwriter will entertain fans in the city's Hydro arena on Wednesday July 11.

In a statement on his official website, Simon, 76, said: "I've often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I'd consider bringing my performing career to a natural end.

"Now I know: it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating, and something of a relief.

"I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians.

"I think about music constantly."

Simon revealed his decision was influenced by a bereavement last year.

He added: "Sadly, we lost our lead guitarist and my friend of 30 years, Vincent N'guini, who died last December.

"His loss is not the only reason I've decided to stop touring, but it is a contributing factor.

"Mostly, though, I feel the travel and time away from my wife and family takes a toll that detracts from the joy of playing. "

"I'd like to leave with a big Thank You to the many folks around the world who've come out to watch me play over the last 50 years."

Simon confirmed he still plans to do the "occasional performance" after the tour and said he will donate those earnings to charity, especially those with an environmental focus.

The statement concluded: "Once again, I am very grateful for a fulfilling career and, of course, most of all to the audiences who heard something in my music that touched their hearts."

The 16-time Grammy winner shot to fame in the 1960s as one half of the duo Simon & Garfunkel.

Their hits included The Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson and Bridge over Troubled Water.

Simon split with Art Garfunkel in 1970 but went on to forge a successful career as a solo artist.

His most popular album, Graceland, was released in 1986 and sold 14 million copies worldwide on its release.

Simon will kick-off Homeward Bound - The Farewell Tour in Vancouver on May 16.

Fans in North America and Europe are being promised "an historic evening of career-spanning hits and timeless classics".

Tickets for the Hydro gig go on sale at 10am on Friday.
