A woman has been seriously injured after a car careered off a road.

The crash happened on the A714 between Newton Stewart and Glentrool, in Dumfries, at 11.25am on Monday.

Officers have closed the road, which is expected to be shut for several hours.

The woman suffered a severe head injury and an air ambulance has been called to the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "It has involved one vehicle.

"It's a serious crash and the road will be closed for a considerable amount of time."
