An angry parent has hit out over conditions at a school in Irvine.

She has demanded Irvine Academy is shut down until water and heating problems are fixed.

The school was closed for two days due to plumbing issues but was reopened to its senior pupils on Wednesday.

Parents complained the school still had a foul smell, no heating and portable toilets when children returned.

The council said the heating and water supply will be in place for all pupils from Thursday and pushed prelims back by one week.

Speaking to STV, a parent said: "My daughter attends this school and has gone in this morning to a foul smelling building. Portable loos are there, lunch will not be served it's sandwiches only.

"It's freezing and portable heaters are being used. How senior pupils are meant to study and pass prelims in these conditions is beyond me.

"The council need to shut the building down until the water and heating is fixed."

In response, a representative for North Ayrshire Council said: "The water supply has now been fully restored to the school and the heating system is also in full working order.

"We had put in place contingency arrangements to enable S4-S6 pupils to return to school today - these include temporary toilet facilities and access to drinking water, but these have not been required, as the water supply has been functioning normally since this morning.

"Given the disruption to learning this week, a decision has been taken to postpone preliminary examinations for one week, to give our pupils more time to prepare.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this matter has caused our pupils and their parents/carers."
