Engineers to work over festive period on rail upgrades
Network Rail said 4,500 engineers will work more than 50,000 hours on Christmas and New Year.
Engineers will be working round-the-clock over the festive period to complete more than £15m of infrastructure upgrades across Scotland.
Network Rail said 4500 engineers will work more than 50,000 hours at Christmas and New Year on projects around Scotland as part of Network Rail's UK-wide Railway Upgrade Plan.
Over the festive period, signalling and overhead power lines will be renewed and replaced around Glasgow.
New tracks will also be laid on sections of the west coast main line and the line between Edinburgh and Glasgow, while a junction in Lanarkshire will also be renewed.
Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail, said: "Thousands of passengers are on the cusp of seeing their rail journeys transformed in the months ahead as our massive £50bn Railway Upgrade Plan reaches its final stages, with the introduction of thousands of new services now just around the corner.
"This Christmas will see over 30,000 dedicated and hard-working railway people working round-the-clock to deliver a bigger and better railway for the millions of people who rely on it every day."
The electrification of the network will also continue with new overhead power lines installed on sections of the Stirling-Alloa-Dunblane route and an upgrade of tracks and platforms at Edinburgh Waverley.
The company said engineers will also refurbish and maintain bridges, level crossings and tracks elsewhere during the holidays while the railway network is quieter.
