A convicted killer who absconded from Barlinnie prison has been on the run for a day.

Police continue to search for Walter Bett, who was last seen at Crow Wood Golf Club in Muirhead, Glasgow around 8.25am on Tuesday.

Members of the public have been warned not to approach the 39-year-old, who had been on an external work placement.

Police confirmed he had not yet been traced on Wednesday morning.

Bett was first jailed for culpable homicide in 1996 before going back to prison in 2008 for attempted murder.

His victim was left brain-damaged after an hour-long attack in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, in which Bett cut the 50-year-old's throat.

Bett is 5ft 8in, of stocky build, with short receding brown hair and brown eyes.

When last seen he was wearing a black padded jacket , striped navy top, blue jeans and black Nike trainers with red laces and sole, a grey baseball cap and carrying a rucksack.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Officers are advising members of the public not to approach Mr Bett if they see him but to contact police.

"Anyone with information about where he is should contact Cumbernauld Police Station via 101, or in an emergency, then on 999. Please quote reference number 0965/31/10/17.
