The 70-year-old man needed stitches for a wound to his head after the assault.
A pensioner was knocked to the ground during an argument over a parking space at the car park of a Homebase.
The 70-year-old suffered a head wound and needed stitches after the assault at the Cuckoo Bridge Retail Park in Dumfries.
Police said a man aged around 50 became involved in an argument with the pensioner at around 11.15am on Friday.
The attacker was not known to the victim and left the scene in a small blue or silver car after knocking the elderly man to the ground.
The pensioner was treated for a cut to his head at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.
Constable Sandy Currie at Dumfries said: "This appears to be an unprovoked assault on a 70-year-old man over a parking space.
"The attack has resulted in the victim being left with a cut to the head which required him to attend hospital for treatment.
"I would ask that anyone who witnessed the assault or knows the identity of the suspect involved to contact police on the 101 number."
