Commuters are facing major disruption after a car blocked a railway line in West Dunbartonshire.

Scotrail said the vehicle was obstructing services on the line between Bowling and Kilpatrick.

Services between Edinburgh and Helensburgh Central via Airdrie have been cancelled, delayed or terminated as a result of the blockage.

Services between Airdrie and Balloch and Cumbernauld and Dumbarton Central have also been affected.

The car was cleared from the line around 5.30pm, but the disruption is expected to last until at least 8pm.

In a statement Scotrail said: "Our staff on site have removed the car and we've inspected the track for damage. We're now able to run trains normally.

"We're working hard to put a full schedule back in place but be prepared for services being disrupted for the next few hours due to trains and crews being out of place."

The operator said replacement buses would run between Dalmuir and Balloch/Helensburgh.

Passengers affected by the disruption are urged to speak to ScotRail staff or check its website and Twitter for updates.
