A pedestrian knocked down on a traffic island is in a critical condition.

The 22-year-old was struck by a van on the A749 in East Kilbride at 7.45am on Wednesday.

He was initially taken to Hairmyres Hospital in the town and later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Doctors describe his condition as "critical". The 22-year-old woman driving the van was uninjured.

Police Scotland sergeant Alasdair Marshall said: "I am appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the A749 this morning.

"If you have any information or any dash cam footage, please do contact us.

"Your information could assist in the ongoing investigation into establishing the circumstances of this incident."
