A rare whisky miniature belonging to a Glasgow couple has been sold at auction for £830.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, had no idea how valuable their Laphroaig 20 Under Proof was until it was seen by a whisky expert.

Laurie Black, of auctioneers McTear's, said it was one of the world's most expensive whisky miniatures.

The bottle dates back to the 1960s and went under the hammer last month.

A handwritten sticker on its back reads "from Maureen July 1962".

Ms Black said: "They had quite a few interesting bottles but the Laphroaig immediately stood out.

"The couple actually said that if we didn't think the miniatures were worth anything they would just throw them out.

"I think they are quite pleased they decided to seek an expert opinion."

She added: "The 20 Under Proof miniature, which dates to the 1960s, is extremely rare and we knew it would attract a lot of interest from collectors.

"When the bidding started at McTear's rare and collectable whisky auction, it was clear it was going to make a good price.

"The fierce bidding showed just how eager some whisky enthusiasts were to add it to their collection, with the bottle finally selling to a buyer in Scotland for £830.

"In total the couple's collection of miniatures sold for £2100."

Ms Black recommended anyone with unusual antiques or collectibles should get them valued.

She said: "I would say it is definitely worth having a look in the back of that drawer or cupboard for anything that looks a little unusual.

"You just never know what you may find."
