Teenager cleared of attacking girlfriend and killing son
A man from Kilmarnock was cleared of killing his five-day-old son on Monday.
A man from Kilmarnock has been cleared of attacking his pregnant girlfriend and causing the death of their son.
Jack Butterworth, 18, had been accused of causing the death of baby Lucas by assaulting his pregnant girlfriend, Katie Strawhorn.
Ms Strawhorn, 20, suffered a "placental abruption", resulting in the child being born by emergency cesarean section.
Baby Lucas was so severely injured that he died in hospital last November at five days old.
The death led to Butterworth, 18, being accused of his son's culpable homicide following a police probe.
Butterworth denied hitting Ms Strawhorn insisting she had fallen in the street instead.
Ms Strawhorn had claimed Butterworth punched her "full force" in the stomach but she had earlier told police she was not assaulted.
She went on to tell jurors that she was still "in love" with Butterworth.
Ms Strawhorn said Butterworth "went to hit her on the back" but accidentally struck her baby bump as she turned round to face him.
Butterworth was found not guilty following a two-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
Ms Strawhorn was not present for the verdict but relatives of both her and Butterworth attended, and some fled the courtroom in tears following the acquittal.
After being acquitted of the killing, Butterworth's QC said the teenager wanted to "express his profound regret".
Gary Allan, defending, added: "He is devastated that the young life of Lucas Strawhorn was affected so adversely by the misadventure that took place that night.
"It will remain with him for the rest of his life."
