Plans for a major clean-up operation at Prestwick beach have been given the go ahead.

After eight years of locals campaigning, South Ayrshire Council leaders have agreed to remove brick and mortar from the beach by the end of October.

The council have agreed to plan an annual cleaning every April.

Prestwick north community council chair Jim Ronney said: "I am thrilled we are finally at this stage. "It has been a long time coming and at last we can get the beach back into shape.

"It is great as well because all the bricks taken off the beach can be used for roads and other things.

"I really think this is going to bring people back to Prestwick to enjoy the beach and I can't wait to see that."
