A new initiative to encourage Ayrshire rail passengers to become more involved in the development of routes officially launched on Monday.

Community rail is part of a government strategy to engage local people in the development and promotion of routes, services and stations.

The South West Scotland Community Partnership covers lines from Gretna Green to Stranraer via Kilmarnock and Ayr.

The group hopes to see disused railway buildings revitalised and facilities like cafes upgraded.

The launch at Kilmarnock station included a presentation about the Partnership's work and an opportunity for Trustees to meet key partner organisations.

The Partnership CEO Dr Mhairi McKenna said: "We very much look forward to establishing stronger links with our key partners."

"Community Rail offers the community the chance to be involved with the improvement of rail services in their area and we are involved in a range of initiatives across our area which we hope will contribute to this process."
