A power cut has hit Glasgow, affecting hundreds of properties and forcing the evacuation of the Buchanan Galleries.

Hundreds of people were led out of city centre shops from around 12.30pm on Monday.

The power cut affected homes and businesses across the G1, G2 and G4 postcode areas.

Power was restored within 25 minutes but many shops still remained closed at 2pm.

A spokesman for Scottish Power said: "Hundreds of customers in G1, G2 and G4 were off but they were all back on within 25 minutes."

A fault at the Rottenrow substation is believed to have been responsible for the outage.

It caused lights to go out and an alarm to repeatedly sound at Buchanan Galleries.

A spokesman for the shopping centre said: "Due to a power cut and subsequent alarm activation, the centre was evacuated earlier today.

"This was a false alarm caused by the power outage."
