A new nine-screen cinema will open in Glasgow by 2019.

It will be developed at the site of the former BHS superstore in the St Enoch Centre after a multi-million pound deal by Vue Entertainment was agreed.

The new venue will create a significant number of full and part-time jobs, according to the cinema firm.

Vue Entertainment said the multiplex, which will be its ninth facility in Scotland, will complement its existing venue in the Glasgow Fort.

The new Vue forms part of a phased redevelopment programme currently under way by St Enoch's landlords, which will include a reconfiguration of the existing mall and the development of a new restaurant area.

Plans for the development were approved by Glasgow City Council in December.

Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of St Enoch Centre, said: "Glasgow is justifiably proud of its reputation as the leading shopping destination outside London and the addition of a cinema will allow us to continue to develop St. Enoch Centre and offer a first class experience for shoppers and visitors to the city.

"The development will also help to create a more connected city centre by reclaiming outdoor space for pedestrians as well as strengthening the connection with Buchanan Street and improving links to the waterfront."

Andrew Warren, real estate team partner with Morisons, the law firm working on behalf of Vue on the deal said: "This is great news for Glasgow city centre.

"The leisure industry continues to be buoyant for the commercial property sector and this is a further indicator that hopefully we can look forward to a more sustained settled period with less business uncertainty."
