For most people the commute to and from work every day can be a bit of a drag.

From having to rely on the notoriously erratic public transport to getting stuck for hours in rush hour traffic, it can be the least enjoyable part of their day.

Calum McNicol is not like most people.

It is on his daily commute from the coastal hamlet of Portencross that his day really gets interesting.

That is because the senior instructor at sportscotland in Cumbrae, Arran shuns the ferry for a 90-minute paddle across the Firth of Clyde in his kayak.

Like most commuters Mr McNicol will be singing along with his music on the journey and he will stop to take the odd phone call.

All of this on his way to the national centre, which will host paddlers for the UK's Kayak and Stand up pedal board symposium.

The sailing boats will be replaced by kayak workshops and demonstrations and of course a chance to learn from the man himself.

With that type of inspiration, perhaps more people will choose to commute to work the Calum's way.
