An intruder attacked a householder sleeping in bed before stealing his Audi.

The thief broke into a man's home in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, before seriously assaulting him. He then took his keys and stole his Audi A6, which was later found burned out.

The 46-year-old victim suffered serious injuries to his face and body and was taken to Monklands Hospital for treatment.

The attack happened at the man's home in Ross Drive around 4.30am on Tuesday. The car was discovered on Stonedyke Road in Carluke at 5.50am that day.

Detective constable Clare Cassidy said: "This was a very traumatic experience for the victim who was sleeping in his bed when he was callously attacked, leaving him with injuries that required medical attention.

"I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the suspect hanging around the vicinity of Ross Drive in Airdrie at around 4.30am on Tuesday or anyone who witnessed suspicious activity on Stonedyke Road, Carluke, afterwards."

The thief is described as 5ft 8in, between 16 and 20 years old. He was heavily built with short, dark hair and was wearing a grey hooded tracksuit.
