Labour have regained control of Glasgow North East from the SNP.

Paul Sweeney gained 13,637 votes to reclaim the constituency from Anne McLaughlin, who had won the seat in 2015.

He overturned the nationalist's 9222 majority from two years ago to win by a slender margin of 242.

The seat had been held by Labour from 2009 until 2015 with Willie Bain serving as the area's MP.

The result was one of Labour's wins in the central belt with the others coming in Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill as well as Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

Ged Killen gained victory by 265 votes in Rutherglen while Labour's triumph in Coatbridge was by 1586 votes.
