Two shopping centres have introduced a random bag search policy following recent terrorism attacks.

Silverburn in Glasgow and Union Square in Aberdeen, both owned by property development firm Hammerson, announced on Thursday they would be increasing security as a general precaution and stressed there was no specific threat to either centre.

In recent months there have been three terrorism attacks in the UK - with the atrocity on London Bridge and the Manchester suicide bombing following the attack at the Palace of Westminster in March.

A spokeswoman for Hammerson said: "We would like to make customers aware that the centre is operating random cursory bag searches and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

"It is important to note that this measure does not relate to any specific threat, but is part of our enhanced security procedures following recent events. The safety of our customers and colleagues remains our number one priority.

"Customers should remain alert but not alarmed, and should report anything suspicious to the police."
