Hometown hero: Sharon Rooney, My Mad Fat Diary star
The young actress hails from the bustling city of Glasgow.
Hometown Hero is a series celebrating some of the area's best known and widely loved names.
Most know Sharon Rooney for her bumbling, sarcastic and wildly funny portrayal of a "mad fat diarist" on a hit E4 drama but few realise the actress hails from Glasgow.
The 28-year-old had dreamt of pursuing a career in acting from a very young age and decided to leave school at 16 to enrol in a performing arts course at Hull University.
Sharon shot to fame in 2013 with her first ever television role - an overweight teenager describing life on release from a psychiatric hospital in E4's My Mad Fat Diary.
While her character Rae Earl suffers bouts of depression and crippling anxiety, Rooney is never seen without her colourful clothing and a brilliant smile.
She received a Scottish Bafta nomination for her role and was also nominated for a Royal Television Society award in 2014.
Sharon also went on to appear in the pilot episode of BBC's Sherlock and Two Doors Down, and starred in ITV's 2016 drama Brief Encounters.
She is currently starring in Dave's Zapped, a sitcom set in both the real world and a fantasy world, as Sophie.
