Scots Royal Marines in £65m Indian Ocean drugs bust
The team discovered 455kg of cannabis and 266kg in heroin hidden in a boat's freezer.
Scottish Royal Marine commandos have seized a £65m drugs haul from smugglers in the Indian Ocean.
The team discovered 455kg of cannabis and 266kg in heroin hidden in a freezer after boarding a suspicious vessel.
After the crew of the HMS Monmouth posed for photos with the haul it was dumped into the sea.
The marines boarded the dhow - a type of vessel used by fishermen in the Middle East and Indian Ocean - after seeing it in an area not usually not used for fishing.
They spent 60 hours searching the boat before discovering the drugs packed beneath three tonnes of ice.
Last year, a Scottish Royal Marines commando hit the headlines for after shooting out the engine of a drug smuggler's speedboat during a £40m cocaine bust in the Caribbean.
The sniper brought an end to a six-hour chase by disabling the vessel with a well-placed shot from the back of a helicopter.
The boat was later revealed to have carrying around a tonne of illegal drugs.
Colonel Jock Fraser, commanding officer of the Clyde-based 43 Commando, said: "The Royal Marine boarding team once again showed the vital role 43 Commando fulfils in supporting the Royal Navy to prosecute counter-narcotics and maritime security operations across the globe."
