A man has died from a drug overdose in a Scottish prison.

The inmate, 46, from Glasgow, was found unconscious at Shotts Prison.

Paramedics were called to the jail to find the man lying in his cell on Saturday, May 13.

The man, who was serving a sentence for armed robbery, was taken to Wishaw General Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

A definitive cause of the death will not be fully established until the results of toxicology tests are confirmed.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 6.39pm on Saturday, May 13, to attend an address at Canthill Road in Shotts.

"One male patient in his 40s was taken to Wishaw General Hospital."

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: "Police Scotland has been advised and the matter will be reported to the procurator fiscal.

"Next of kin have been informed and a fatal accident inquiry may be held in due course."
