A man ran over his mother's ex-partner in a "serious and potentially life-threatening" assault after being told he had "battered" her.

Robert Coleman, 28, hit Stephen Haggerty with his car, throwing him into the air and leaving him with multiple injuries including a broken arm, fractured ribs and fractures in his neck.

Mr Haggerty had been in an "on and off" relationship with Coleman's mum Jacqueline Hartley for 15 years but had separated a few months before the incident on September 17 last year.

Earlier that day Haggerty had gone to Ms Hartley's flat in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, and the former couple had an argument over money.

Ms Hartley claimed Mr Haggerty threw her mobile phone against a wall during the argument before grabbing hold of her handbag as she tried to leave the room.

A tug-of-war over the bag then ensued, the court heard, leading to Ms Hartley falling to the floor and calling on her brother, Colin, who was staying in the flat below.

Mr Hartley then came up to the flat and told Mr Haggerty to leave, before telephoning Jacqueline's son, Coleman, who appeared in his Silver Volkswagen Golf five minutes later.

The 28-year-old then drove his car alongside Mr Haggerty and accelerated into him before braking sharply, throwing Haggerty into the air against a nearby wall.

Witnesses heard a loud "bang" and screeching of tyres from the street before Mr Haggerty was found lying on the ground.

Police found Coleman's car nearby with his fingerprints on the driver's door and he was later arrested in connection with the incident .

He made no comment when charged.

Appearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Monday, Coleman, from Clydebank, admitted assaulting Mr Haggerty to the danger of his life on September 17, 2016.

Mr Haggerty underwent surgery on September 19 to repair the broken bone in his right arm.

The court heard medical evidence indicated the injuries were "serious and potentially life-threatening".

Coleman was handed a deferred sentence by Judge Lady Scott and will learn his fate on June 12 at the High Court in Edinburgh.
