A huge scrapyard blaze has been put out by firefighters who battled it for more than 12 hours.

Smoke billowing from the fire near Ranger FC's Ibrox Stadium could be seen rising above the city from 40 miles away and firefighters battled the blaze into the night.

Water had to be pumped from the Clyde to douse the flames at Japanese Auto Parts on Helen Street after the fire broke out at around 4.30pm.

Scottish Power said one of its buildings was involved in the fire and power had to be shut off to 3000 properties in Govan as a precaution.

On Monday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) had crews at the scene continuing a "dampening down" of the site.

During the height of the blaze, residents were urged to unplug all their electrical equipment and switch off central heating systems.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at about 4.30pm and more than 50 firefighters were deployed.

SFRS incident commander Gregg McKearney, said: "Our crews have worked tirelessly to bring this fire under control.

"Firefighters remain at the scene as they carry out dampening down work and ensure the safety of the public."

SFRS spokesman Peter Heath said the fire engulfed a building before spreading to a large yard at the back full of tyres.

Firefighters worked to protect an electricity substation which supplies a "significant part of the Glasgow and Govan area".

Power was restored before 10pm and the fire was largely out by 6am, although dozens of firefighters remained on the scene.
