Child rapist killed man who confronted him over sex attack
Kenneth Wheeler, who had earlier raped a girl, plunged a knife into Scott Mackenzie three times.
A child rapist murdered a father-of-three who went to confront him over the sex attack on a 14-year-old schoolgirl.
Kenneth Wheeler, 33, stabbed Scott Mackenzie to death and wounded the victim's son Jamie Mackenzie in a knife attack at his home in Shotts, North Lanarkshire.
The sex attacker was convicted after trial of rape, murder and attempted murder and was sentenced to 22 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday for his crimes.
Judge Lady Carmichael told Wheeler: "You have been convicted of the rape of a 14-year-old girl, and murder and attempted murder."
The court heard Wheeler plied the schoolgirl with alcohol before raping her.
Mr Mackenzie and his son were among those who confronted Wheeler.
Lady Carmichael told Wheeler: "You set in train a series of events of the most awful and tragic nature. You stabbed Mr Mackenzie three times. One of the wounds damaged an artery."
The judge said it was "particularly reprehensible" that Wheeler had no insight into the damage he had caused.
Lady Carmichael told him: "You took the life of a hard-working, much loved husband and father and deprived his grandchild of ever knowing him."
The rapist murderer also attempted to kill Mr Mackenzie's 20-year-old son Jamie.
Delivery driver Mr Mackenzie , 41, had been enjoying a summer evening with family and friends after a barbecue when he heard of the sex attack on the teenage girl and went to neighbour Wheeler's home to confront him, where he was fatally stabbed.
Wheeler then went to Mackenzie's house with a blood-stained knife, threatening to kill Mr Mackenzie's wife Tracy.
A teenage witness told of how Wheeler had a large kitchen knife, adding: "It was covered in blood. It was as though he was possessed."
The incident ended when police officers arrived and used pepper spray to subdue Wheeler.
Wheeler was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl at his home in Inverkip Drive, Shotts, on June 5 after supplying her with alcohol and of murdering Mr Mackenzie and attempting to murder his son Jamie at his home on the same date.
One teenage witness said Wheeler had gone to the Mackenzie's home in Shotts and was trying to get in and was pushing the murder victim's wife forcefully.
She said the incident ended when police officers arrived and used pepper spray to subdue Wheeler on June 5.
Mr Mackenzie's widow Tracy, 39, told the trial they had been married for almost 20 years.
She said that earlier in the evening Wheeler had called her "a boring b*****d" after she had told a teenage girl that she was not allowed a can of fruit cider because of her age.
The drink was poured down the sink but she later formed the impression the girl had been drinking.
She said her front door later burst open and another teenager came in "saying he had raped her".
The court was told Wheeler's extended family has had to leave the area but they have maintained contact with him.
Wheeler showed no emotion as he was led away to begin his sentence.
