Knife attacker attempted to murder man dressed as scarecrow
Graham McKinlay repeatedly stabbed Thomas Brennan after he left a fancy dress party in Glasgow.
A serial knife attacker attempted to murder a partygoer dressed as a scarecrow.
Graham McKinlay launched the unprovoked attack on Thomas Brennan as his victim walked in costume with his fiancee from a fancy dress birthday party in Glasgow city centre towards a nightclub.
McKinlay, 32, pulled part of Mr Brennan's costume over his head before repeatedly stabbing him with a knife.
Mr Brennan needed emergency medical treatment for a punctured lung and damaged spleen after the murder attempt.
The 28-year-old was left with permanent scarring and is now reliant on pain killers and suffers nightmares.
At the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Boyd of Duncansby said the assault on Mr Brennan was an unprovoked attack on a young man who was enjoying an evening out with his fiancee.
He added it was clear the injuries Mr Brennan suffered in the murder bid were "life changing".
Lord Boyd said: "The best word to describe what you did to him is your own - that is 'despicable'."
The judge told McKinlay he was satisfied he should impose an Order for Lifelong Restriction on him and ordered he must serve a minimum of five years in prison.
Unemployed McKinlay, of no fixed abode, had earlier admitted attempting to murder Mr Brennan on June 13, 2016, on Union Street in Glasgow.
He also pled guilty to two further knife attacks committed within a day of each other in 2014, one of which was racially aggravated.
