A man died in hospital four days after being detained by police.
The 43-year-old man was held by officers in Glasgow on Thursday, December 22.
He took ill after being taken into custody and was transferred to hospital for treatment but died on Boxing Day.
A probe has now been launched by watchdog the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Prosecutors ordered that the police watchdog carry out a full investigation before reporting their findings to the Crown Office.
A spokesman for the PIRC said: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) to undertake an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 43-year-old man on Monday, December 26, who had been detained by police officers in Glasgow on Thursday December 22.
"A report on the commissioner's findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."
