A paedophile has been brought to justice for abusing two schoolboys while working as a swimming instructor in the 1980s.

Alistair Findlay, 57, preyed on the boys in the early 1980s in Shawlands, Glasgow, but was only convicted of these crimes after police received an anonymous letter in December 2015 making allegations against him.

This led to two men giving evidence, detailing the abuse they suffered at his hands when he was their swimming coach.

One victim branded him a "scumbag" and told the jury he would "never forgot" what happened to him.

After a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Findlay was convicted of two charges of using lewd and libidinous practices towards the two boys between January 1981 and December 1982 in Glasgow's south side.

Findlay, who was jailed for six years in 1999 after trying to source a child for sex, already has a string of convictions spanning 25 years.

Both men, now 46, described to the jury how Findlay, then a man in his early 20s, abused his power to carry out the sex attacks.

His first victim pointed him out in court and was asked if he was remembering the correct person.  He looked at his abuser and told the jury: "I'm 100% sure, I have made no mistake.

"There is no confusion in my head, no mistake on who was involved. Only one was involved. It's as clear as day, I never forgot it.

"The only one that was involved was him, it was that man there, you scumbag."

The 46-year-old described how Findlay told him he would take him home from swimming lessons before abusing him in his car.

The second victim could not point out Findlay in court given the length of time since he last saw him but gave evidence that a man in his early 20s by the same name, who was a swimming coach and drove a red Triumph Dolomite, was his attacker.

In evidence, the court heard DVLA records confirmed Findlay was the registered keeper of the same type of car during that time.

The man told how he swore at Findlay during a swimming lesson one evening which the instructor left hanging over him for weeks.

He then said weeks later Findlay asked him if he wanted to see "dirty books" and to tell his parents they were going for chips after a lesson.

The witness said: "He didn't drive to the chip shop on Victoria Road, we drove to Cuthbertson Street."

Jurors heard Findlay showed the schoolboy a pornographic magazine and touched him, before taking him home.

Findlay told the boy: "Don't tell your mum and dad what happened."

He was jailed for six years in 1999 after two prostitutes reported him to the police for asking them to find a child for him to sexually abuse.

At the High Court, he was ordered to be supervised for a further six years on his release. He was released on parole in 2004 but returned to prison a month later when an internet cafe owner saw him looking at child abuse images online.

Findlay was released again on April 1, 2011, and made subject to an order which banned him from owning any electrical equipment that allowed him access to the internet.

He was arrested hours later after buying the internet-enabled mobile phone at Asda in Govan.

Findlay has other convictions from 2012, 2014 and 2015 for breaching a sexual offences prevention order.

Sheriff Joseph Platt called for reports and remanded Findlay in custody until next month when he will be sentenced.
