A 97-year-old woman died after being knocked down by a car while walking her dog.

The pensioner was struck by a BMW in Ayr at around 4.55pm on Sunday, police confirmed.

She was knocked down by the grey vehicle while crossing Holmston Road with her pet.

The woman was taken to Ayr Hospital where she died a short time later, while her Jack Russell-type dog died while being taken by police to a local vet.

Police said the 52-year-old man who was driving the BMW was uninjured in the incident.

The route was closed between the Market Inn roundabout and Lothian Road for around five hours until it reopened at 10pm.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to get in touch with them by calling Irvine Police Station on 101.
