A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash between a car and a van.

A Citroen Picasso travelling north and a southbound Vauxhall Movano collided on the A725 near the Raith interchange in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, at 6.55am on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old driver of the Picasso was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he remains in a critical condition.

The 44-year-old van driver suffered hand injuries and was taken to Monklands District General Hospital.

The A725, between Bellziehill roundabout and the Raith interchange, has been closed in both directions.

Local diversions are in place however motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Sergeant Joe McGuckien said: "This road was very busy this morning and although we have spoken to a couple of witnesses, we still need more people who saw the crash happen to come forward.

"Anyone with information can contact the Motherwell Roads Policing Unit on 101."
