A Scottish green space has been awarded the title of best park in the UK.

Rouken Glen Park in East Renfrewshire won the public vote ahead of three other sites across the country.

The amenity in Giffnock was awarded the title at the Fields in Trust Awards ceremony at Lord's cricket ground in London on Wednesday night.

More than 10,000 votes were cast in the search to find the nation's favourite park.

Councillor Vincent Waters, East Renfrewshire Council's convener of environment, said: "Rouken Glen has always held a very special place in the hearts of all its visitors and now it's official - it's the best park in the UK.

"This is a fantastic accolade to win and is just reward for all the hard work our dedicated staff and volunteers have put in to improving the park over the last few years. It has unrivalled natural beauty and there is something for all ages to enjoy.

"Rouken Glen has been loved by all for more than 100 years, and will continue attract thousands of visitors to East Renfrewshire in the years to come."

Helen Griffiths, Fields in Trust chief executive, said: "The Fields in Trust Awards help recognise the role that parks and other green spaces play in our communities, bringing people together and creating a safe outdoor environment that everyone should have access to no matter where they live."

She added: "Congratulations to all the sites and champions on their Awards tonight and thank you to all those outstanding individuals across the UK who go the extra mile for their local green spaces."

Rouken Glen was up against Castle Gardens in Antrim, Pontypool Park in Torfaen and Preston Park Rockery in Brighton in the shortlist stage of the competition.
